Exceptional 77” Helen Hobey Baker curved walnut sideboard/credenza, circa 1960s

For sale is this mid-century masterwork designed by the acclaimed duo Helen and Hobey Baker circa 1960s – now offered for sale after just undergoing a complete restoration to preserve its authenticity while resetting it for another generation of usage. I’ve restored many mid-century credenzas, dressers, etc. over the years and this is the first Helen Hobey Baker case piece I’ve ever encountered so it’s as rare as it is unique – especially with that spectacular curved/concave front. It’s certain to be the focal point of your living space so if you're looking for something stellar, uncommon and unique, this is it!

OVERVIEW: Helen and Hobey Baker were a pair of New York socialites turned designers in the 1950s-70s. Their legendary designs are known for impressive structural components and stylistic complexity as expertly depicted in this stunning sideboard. The Bakers were masters of geometry juxtaposition…frequently balancing sharp, linear details (like the vertical slats of tambour doors and 45 degree corners) against an exceptional front sweeping, biomorphic curvature.

This piece features a dramatic, curvaceous façade normally not seen in midcentury pieces. That overall concave element beautifully melds with a middle section of vertically slatted doors that swing open to reveal three large pullout drawers – flanked by three additional drawers on each side with beautifully-figured walnut fronts. The entire piece is set upon tapered support cross arms and integrated legs. Another signature element of the Baker duo was the amalgamation of the legs into the main casework chassis, giving this lovely storage piece an incredibly light and overall airy presence. To me, this one has the aerodynamic design lines of an F-18 fighter with the craftsmanship and long-lasting construction of a tank.

CONDITION: Professionally restored with keen attention paid to preserving its vintage integrity and originality, it's now in fantastic condition to remain that way for the next 30+ years. As with all vintage furniture, there are small signs of wear/patina throughout that I've addressed but still remain. It presents beautifully overall, they don't make furniture of this quality anymore.

This heirloom-level, statement piece is also quite versatile and would work brilliantly as a media/entertainment center, dining room buffet or spectacular bedroom dresser. Enjoy!

DIMENSIONS: 77.5" wide x 21" deep x 32" high
