Offered for sale is a rare vintage Hans Wegner “Mama Bear” chair and matching ottoman in glorious Danish teak for AP Stolen, an iconic example of Danish mid-century modern design. With its sculptural arms, organically curved form, and expertly crafted solid wood frame, this chair embodies both comfort and elegance. This particular piece is an authentic vintage original that we opted to leave in “strategically preserved” condition (more on that below).
Circa 1960s, Hans Wegner – often called the “master of the chair” – was one of the most innovative and prolific furniture designers of the 20th century. A key figure in the Danish modern movement, Wegner believed that furniture should be as beautiful from the back as it is from the front. His designs seamlessly combine form, function, and fine craftsmanship. This statement piece of glorious comfort is more than just a chair...its part work of art...part livable investment...part functional furniture ready to enjoy for the next 30+ years, then pass onto the next generation for their appreciation – a timeless addition to any sophisticated interior.
The Mama Bear Chair (model AP-27) and matching ottoman (model AP-29) was first introduced by Wegner in 1954 for A.P. Stolen, following the success of his earlier Papa Bear Chair (model AP-19). The Mama Bear Chair features a more compact and slender silhouette than its larger sibling, with a strong focus on comfort, ergonomic support, and refined wood detailing — particularly in the armrests, which appear to “hug” the sitter. The chair’s nickname, “Mama Bear” complements Wegner’s well-known “Papa Bear” chair and reflects its slightly smaller, more delicate proportions. Both the chair and ottoman are stamped/marked as well, verifying authenticity.
“STRATEGICALLY PRESERVED” CONDITION: After careful consideration, we thoughtfully preserved the wood aspects utilizing traditional Danish methods so the lovely teak elements have been restored/reconditioned while still preserving the character and beauty of their original patina.
The vintage black Naugahyde is in very good condition with some areas of vintage wear throughout (I’d say 8 out of 10), so we opted to leave it as-is…the thought being since this is such a significant chair – we wanted to give the new owner the full opportunity to make the upholstery selections of their choice. Additionally, you could live with it for a while in your own setting until inspiration strikes as to what color, material and texture upholstery you want to pursue – I’ve taken that approach with a number of pieces in our personal collection and always appreciate how things turn out when lighting, setting and personal taste are thoughtfully considered.
